Volvo XC40: Everything You Need To Know

The all-new Volvo XC40 is a premium compact SUV, a first for the Swedish car maker. Here's everything you need to know about the Volvo XC40.

The all-new Volvo XC40 is the brand's first venture into the premium compact SUV class. The XC40 benefits from advanced connectivity, entertainment and safety features; all deriving from Volvo's latest 60 and 90 series cars - the XC60, S90, V90 and XC90.

The XC40 is powered by Volvo's Drive-E engines to keep running costs down and bring efficiency up, also offered in either front or all-wheel-drive with manual or an automatic gearbox.

As more manufacturers start to bring their own iterations of compact SUVs to the market, will the XC40 be able to hold its own and compete with rivals?

Here's everything you need to know about the new Volvo XC40.

Volvo XC40: Pricing

The Volvo XC40 rivals the new Jaguar E-Pace and the BMW X1, it sits between them in terms of pricing.

The XC40 starts from £27,905 for the T3 Momentum version ranging up to £40,000 + depending on what engine and specification you choose.

If you do go for the T3 Momentum variant - the entry-level model - you'll get a 156hp engine paired with a manual gearbox, although, more engines will be offered further down the line such as 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol that will produce 120hp.

Although the XC40 costs a bit more than the BMW X1, the XC40 brings a refreshed design, as well as staying true to Volvo's high-quality design language, inside and out. The basic spec level is also generous; all models come with a 9" touch-screen infotainment system, SAT-NAV, LED lights, a TFT instrument display, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and 18-inch alloys.

Volvo XC40: Exterior and Design

Traditionally car manufacturers present some pretty outlandish features and designs on their concept cars, though the XC40 seems to tell a bit of a different story.

The XC40 is very similar - if not identical - to the Volvo 40.1 concept previewed over the past few years. The only two features that have been swapped out in the production model are the camera-based wing mirrors and the flushed-in door handles, which is probably a good thing as the side of the 40.1 concepts looked like a bit of a blank canvas with flush door handles.

The XC40 takes on a very modern design; various body creases can be found throughout the bodywork to enhance the look, whilst the front grille and headlight housing give the XC40 an aggressive, but modern look.

18-inch alloy wheels come as standard on all models, giving the XC40 a raised road presence and the roof can also be finished in a contrasting colour to the body.

Volvo XC40: Interior and Technology

On the interior, the XC40 borrows features from larger vehicles in Volvo's range. The infotainment screen is following on from a trend set by Tesla with it being portrait orientated rather than the landscape screen we are used to.

From preview pictures, we can see that Volvo has given the software on the infotainment screen a really simplistic and clear layout. The XC40 mimics the larger XC90 in the range with a sleek look with fewer physical buttons as seen on older Volvo vehicles.

Further improvements have been made to storage throughout the interior such as bigger door pockets that are big enough for a tablet or laptop and in the centre console you'll find a compartment to charge your smartphone.

Three trim levels will be offered, these are; Momentum - which is the entry-level trim, R-Design - which is more of a sporty variant and the top of the range is the Inscription trim - adding a bit more class.

Although there are three trim levels to choose from, the technology on lower trims in the line up is pretty generous. All variants of the XC40 will get a 9" touchscreen infotainment system, SAT-NAV, LED headlights, a 12.3-inch instrument display, dual-zone climate control with air-cleansing 'ClearZone' filtration and rear parking sensors.

The Momentum trim level gets quite a few customisation options to personalise the car to you, Volvo offer either black or white alloy wheels, contrasting white roofs and different configurations to the textiles and upholstery inside.

Volvo XC40: Safety and Driver Assistance

Volvo has always been very focused on the safety of its vehicles; emergency braking is standard, this will detect animals and pedestrians, Oncoming Lane Mitigation warn the driver if they are drifting out of their lane and will provide steering assistance to avoid any oncoming vehicles.

Autonomous driving is slowly making its way into more vehicles, albeit watered down forms of it, drivers can benefit from some advanced autonomous driving features on the XC40 which brings a semi-autonomous drive feature.

Semi-autonomous driving comes as an optional extra on every XC40 and will assist with steering the vehicle at speeds of up to 80mph, also taking care of acceleration and braking to help keep the car within lane markings or a certain distance from the vehicle in front.

Volvo XC40: Engines and Performance

From launch, there will be five engine options to choose from, made up of three petrol and two diesel.

Petrol engines come with 156, 190 and 247hp power outputs whilst diesel engines come as 150 and 190hp versions. Most engines in the lineup will come with an automatic gearbox, although, manual engines are offered on vehicles lower down in the range.

Further down the line, the XC40 will get some new engines; the most prominent being Volvo's new 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine which has a power output of 120hp - giving the XC40 a lower entry-level price.

A plug-in hybrid version is also expected later on for the XC40 which will offer better efficiency and increased performance.
