Skodas new SUV - Skoda Karoq, replaces the Yeti and shares tech with the SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Skoda's new SUV - the Karoq - was recently unveiled in Stockholm, Sweden. The new vehicle from Skoda comes as a replacement for the Skoda Yeti, taking on the style of a compact SUV with a refreshed design to create a broader appeal.
As it's being built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, it will share technology and parts with the SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan.
The Karoq has been designed with the new Kodiaq in mind. The Karoq stays true to the brand's Alaskan naming structure as well as mimicking the design language used on the Kodiaq. From launch, the Karoq will be available with a choice of five engines, four of which are brand new to the Skoda family.
"With the Karoq we are opening a new chapter in the success story of SUV at Skoda. The Yeti sold 100,000 cars per year, which was no less than 10% of global sales. We expect the Karoq to do more than that." Said Skoda CEO, Bernhard Maier.
The Skoda Karoq will be offered with five engine options from launch, these are built up of two petrol engines: a 1.0-litre TSI with 113bhp and a 1.5-litre TSI with 148bhp. The three diesel engines that will be offered are a 2.0-litre TDI with 148bhp, this has previously featured in the Skoda family but two new diesel engines will also be offered, these are: a 1.6-litre TDI which is capable of 113bhp and at the top of the range sits a 2.0-litre TDI with 186bhp.
The new 2.0-litre TDI engine will come with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox as standard. Other engines in the range will be available with a six speed-manual.
Like most compact SUVs, the Koraq will be available in either two or four-wheel-drive, whilst higher specs in the range will be offered with a Driving Mode Select system with five modes, allowing the driver to switch the drive mode to suit the terrain. Five modes will be available, these are: Normal, Sport, Eco, Individual and Snow.
"After the Kodiaq, the Karoq takes the next consistent step in our SUV design. We've done over 2.5m kilometres of testing - that's equivalent to 60 times around the world." Said Christian Strube, Skoda's board member for technical development.
He continued: "We have the option of personalisation for up to three different drivers. You can set up to 200 settings and that's saved to your personal key. We have made clever use of the interior space. It's typically Skoda."
Driver assistance systems are plentiful on the Karoq, some of which are standard but some will be available as additional options. Front Assist autonomous emergency braking system features as standard and Adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, traffic sign recognition, rear traffic alert and lane assist will be available as options.
A customisable digital instrument panel features and the car will also come with three individual keys, these are used so the Karoq can remember a particular driver's preference in terms of lighting, infotainment and various other settings.
A wireless smartphone charging pad also features along with adjustable interior ambient lighting. Further features include heated rear seats and steering wheel, hands-free boot system and an electronically retractable tow bar.
In terms of practicality the Karoq has space for five passengers with a 521-litre boot capacity, this is further expanded to 1630-litres with the rear seats folded down.
Skoda are yet to reveal pricing on the Karoq along with a date of release, but it's expected to be available later in the year.
