NEW Volvo V60: Executive Estate Refined

Without showing off too much, the Volvo V60 is an elegant, sophisticated and luxurious model which offers a fantastic amount of interior space for four adults and plenty of luggage. The new V60 is 10cm longer than its previous, but is much easier to drive, with the added bonus of Volvo's exceptional comfort.

The V60 could be compared to the Audi A4 Avant or the Mercedes C-Class Estate. Although, we believe this car has much more to offer. The simplistic infotainment screen stands out amongst the centre console, giving you a modern touch to the long-standing, much loved estate. You can't have everything however, because as beautifully presented this infotainment is, it isn't very practical when you are driving. Which may be a slight downfall for some drivers.

NEW Volvo V60: Engines and Performance

The V60 has a bit of a limited range of engines. Although offered in both manual and automatic, the D3 and D4 engines are about as exciting as you are going to get with this Volvo.

The D3 engines offer you 150hp. The manual will give you 122-117g/km emissions, whereas the automatic will give you 126-120g/km.

The D4 engines have 190hp. The manual gives you 122-117g/km and the automatic gives you 125-119g/km

If you're wanting a little more response in your acceleration and you're not too worried about your fuel efficiency, you can go for the T5 engine with 250hp and 160-157g/km emissions.

The V60 Cross Country is limited to one engine only, the D4 automatic with 190hp and 125-119g/km emissions.

The V60 is much more dynamic than the V90. The most recommended engine is the 190hp D4 diesel. It may have slightly less push power than the T5 petrol engine, but you will gain a steady, comfortable speed on long journeys.

The D4 has a great fuel economy, which gives you over 60mpg and has a 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds. Plenty enough power!

The V60 has a really comfortable cruising speed, when using the (optional) driving aids, you will discover your drive to be much less stressful. It isn’t the most comfortable on poor road surfaces however, but this can be excused when you take the V60 out onto the motorway where it truly belongs. it offers a great fuel economy, with plenty of power to move the V60 at a good pace, even when you fill it with all your luggage.

NEW Volvo V60: Interior and Technology

The entry-level models are given tartan-like and leather seats which offers Volvo’s playful side. If you were hoping to get some leather in there, you'll be expected to pay an additional £2,250 for the Momentum Pro, which offers a few more than just leather seats, but still annoyingly isn't available on the standard Momentum model.

If having leather seats in your Volvo is a major deal-breaker, it might be worth considering choosing the Inscription trim. This will mean you have the benefit of a higher-spec car and the leather you were looking for at an additional cost of £3,500. This sits around £1,750 more than the Momentum Pro, but you get a little more.

The seats are designed with incredibly soft and comfortable high-quality leathers. The interior colour scheme is soft and neutral, which gives the cabin look and feel very much like being inside of a Scandinavian Airlines first-class lounge. Colours of leather includes Charcoal (Black), Amber (Tan), Maroon Brown (Dark Brown) and Blond/Charcoal (White/Cream).

Either way, the rear seats offer a great deal of comfort and space – the comfort levels will remain the same. Rear passengers are given a generous amount of room for head and leg room. If you are wondering about making room for a child seat, the doors open wide enough and ISOFIX points are easily found.

A 9-inch high-resolution, portrait-style display looks amazing and simple to use. Operated by swiping through menus, pinching and zoom options make it feel like you are using your own personal tablet. System has a speedy response rate and the large screen allows room for an easy-to-follow navigation display.

A 12.3 inch multifunction display will impress you, when you expect to pay extra for this on most rivals, you can enjoy this as standard on your Volvo V60. Also, as standard, the 10-speaker 170W stereo system offers sharp listening, but you may choose the 600W Harmon Kardon system with 14 speakers or you could pay more and get the 1100W Bowers and Wilkins stereo with 15 speakers and surround sound.

All buttons except Driving Modes, Engine Start and Volume Control have been removed from the dashboard. This definitely neatens up the dashboard and gives it a simplistic feel. You also get a good sense of quality when you use the only buttons the V60 does have. They are built with brush metal finishes which adds an expensive feel to them.

The centre console has a roller shutter cover which helps tidy up the cabin by hiding the cup-holders and mobile phone holder.

In terms of storage space, the V60 gives you plenty of hidey holes for you to put stuff away to keep your Volvo looking as smart as ever. The glove box can fit two large drink bottles and the door bins are a large size. The downside to the door bins however, is the lack of lining at the base which in turn rattles your belongings about a bit when driving. The centre console gives you two cupholders and a tray to place your phone. A deep storage space is also offered under the front centre armrest.

The centre armrest in the back gives you two cup holders and a shallow tray to fit your smartphones.

The boot is impressive. It holds 529 litres of space, which is larger than most of its rivals. The boot sits at a decent height, which makes loading goods much easier and doesn’t put any unnecessary strain on your back.

The boot lid is power-operated, which makes it useful when you have a handful of shopping. You can also opt for the Convenience Pack which gives you a useful button in the boot that you can press and it will automatically fold the rear seats down without having to awkwardly shift around the vehicle. The pack also comes with hooks and nets to help keep your belongings in place. When the seats are folded down you will gain a total of 1,441 litres of space. Doing this also makes plenty of room to fit your bicycle in the boot, should you need to.
