NEW Volkswagen Polo: Everything You Need To Know

The Volkswagen Polo has been around since 1975, we are now on the sixth generation of Polo, but does the new Polo pay homage to previous Polos? Here's everything you need to know about the NEW Volkswagen Polo.

One of the biggest changes to the new Polo is its size. The new Polo is closing the gap between its bigger brother in the range, the Golf. Whilst not massive, the new Polo has had a slight size increase at around 8mm, increasing load space by 71 litres as well as leg room in the back.

The refreshed Polo brings an even more modern design than the outgoing model, with sharp lines on the exterior giving the Polo a more sporty look, the interior gets Volkswagen's high-quality styling with some new touches.

Here's everything you need to know about the new Volkswagen Polo.

NEW Volkswagen Polo: Pricing

Pricing for the new Volkswagen Polo starts at £13,855 for the most basic model - Polo S - which is only available with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine which produces 64bhp. If you move further up the range to the SE trim, prices start from £14,630 which is also offered with the 1.0-litre 64bhp engine.

A new 1.0-litre TSI engine will also be offered in the SE trim which is priced from £15,930. In total there are a few trim levels available on the new Polo, the cheapest starts from £13,855 and the range-topping model holds a price tag of £22,640.

There are also a generous amount of engines on offer with the new Polo, so you'll be able to find the right one for you. You can find out more about the trim levels and engines offered on the new Polo below.

NEW Volkswagen Polo: Exterior and Design

The new model is 81mm longer, 63mm wider and the wheelbase is 92mm longer than the outgoing model. To make this size increase work, Volkswagen has used body creases throughout the exterior of the car.

The new Polo comes with a choice of quite a few exterior colour options to choose from; these are built up of non-metallic shades: Urano Grey, Pure White, Black and Flash Red. Metallic Shades: Reef Blue, Energetic Orange, Ivory Silver, Reflex Silver, Champagne Silver, White Silver and Limestone Grey. Pearl Effect shade is available on all 6 models which are Deep Black which could prove to be quite a popular colour to go for.

If you want to make your Polo stand out a little bit more then as a cost option you can get a metallic black roof on all colour options except on black and Limestone Grey colour options.

Also offered as an option are all LED headlights which replace the Xenon lights on the previous generation.

If you liked the sporty look of the two door Polo then you're out of luck with the new model, it's only available as a five-door.

If you go for the R-Line trim then you get some more sporty features on the exterior such as a bigger roof spoiler, and yes, there is a GTi model.

NEW Volkswagen Polo: Interior and Technology

On the interior things have been really switched up; all Polo's get an 8-inch touchscreen which allows drivers to control driving modes, pair your phone with AppleCarPlay or Android Auto and more features. A nice touch with the infotainment screen is that there are no physical buttons, just touch sensitive ones, whilst it looks great when the screen goes on standby it shows all of your fingerprints.

Another nice feature on the interior is the coloured trim which spans the full length of the dash, whilst some colour combinations look a bit weird, if you pick the right ones then you'll have a very stylish Polo.

In true Volkswagen fashion, high-quality materials have been used throughout that make the Polo a great place to be when driving.

NEW Volkswagen Polo: Safety and Driver Assistance

The new Polo brings some pretty advanced driver assistance systems for its class, giving it the edge over rivals. Driver assistance systems on the new Polo include Front Assist area monitoring system with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor with lane change assistant, Rear Parking Alert system and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The automatic Post-Collision braking system is also offered as standard equipment, the system helps reduce the severity of a collision by helping to avoid a second collision.

The Polo Trendline gets a speed limiter as standard, this limits the car's speed to a speed set by the driver, this can help avoid going too fast on a motorway or when city driving.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring system also features and Hill Hold Assist. On the Comfortline specification level and above features a Driver Alert System which helps to detect fatigue.

All in all, for a small hatchback the new Volkswagen Polo offers quite a bit of safety and driver assistance systems which probably helped the Volkswagen Polo obtain a full 5-star Euro N-Cap safety rating.

NEW Volkswagen Polo: Engines and Performance

Volkswagen has offered quite a wide range of engines for the new Polo, that's if you go for anything above the entry-level Polo S which only offers one engine. In total the new Polo range offers three petrol engines and two diesel.

Engines that are offered on the entry-level model are a 1.0-litre petrol, offering 65bhp and Volkswagen claim a fuel economy of 59mpg.

If you move up to the SE trim level 5 engines are offered, these are;
1.0-litre 65bhp - 60mpg
1.0-litre - 75bhp - 60mpg
1.0-litre TSI - 95bhp - 64mpg

Overall the new Volkswagen Polo has stepped up a gear in terms of size, engine choice and options available. Is there much point in the Golf anymore?
