NEW Mercedes-Benz A Class: Why its such a game changer

The ALL-NEW Mercedes-Benz A-Class is finally here, bringing new technology, engines, and a fresh look. The new A-Class borrows a lot of characteristics from its older brother, the S Class. But what really makes the new A-Class such a game changer? [SEE: NEW Mercedes-Benz A-Class for our latest car leasing offers]

Mercedes has taken what we love about the outgoing A-Class and has refined it with the all-new model. The same A-Class body shape still stands, but Mercedes has added subtle design cues that add for a more sporty and modern look. The interior has also had a design overhaul, but is the new A-Class really a game changer?

Here's everything you need to know about the NEW Mercedes-Benz A Class.

The A-Class is a best selling entry-level vehicle favoured by a younger category of drivers, with a 13-year lower brand image to the preceding series. Mercedes-Benz introduces the new A-Class with more utility value, maintaining its youthful appeal, with a more grown-up twist.

NEW Mercedes-Benz A Class: Exterior and Design

At first glance, you see plenty of new angles and shapes to satisfy your need for that fresh look. The A-Class has adopted a mean LED headlamp style, bringing the preceding ‘bubble’ effect to a close and refining a revolutionary sporty look. The bulging rear lights now have a slimmer, more angular shape to fit comfortably with the trim.

NEW Mercedes-Benz A Class: Interior

The single widescreen display stands out remarkably well when grouped with the ambient lighting package. The air vents are illuminated, which enhances the vehicles jet-like effect. The colour worlds can be matched to the different styles of the widescreen display if required, creating a harmonious overall impression. There are also lighting effects that customers can activate individually.

The touch screen center display offers navigation featuring augmented reality technology and intelligent voice control with natural speech recognition which answers to "Hey Mercedes". The touchscreen is part of the comprehensive MBUX touch-control concept – a triad consisting of the touchscreen, touchpad on the centre console and touch control buttons in the steering wheel.

Inspired by an 'aviation' style, the A-Class features five sporty air vents in a turbine-look. In one equipment line, the vent surround is colour-accentuated at the depth of the vent geometry, giving the impression of an afterburner. The air vents in the middle are driver-oriented, accentuating the sportiness of the interior.

NEW Mercedes-Benz A Class: Safety and Assistance

A much detailed effort has also gone into the improved all-round visibility. The risk of overlooking vehicles or pedestrians when turning off, changing lane or parking has been significantly reduced. All in all, the obscured area has been reduced by 10 percent compared to the preceding model. This was principally achieved by specifically slimming down the A, B and C-pillars and their claddings. Improved visibility is also assured by positioning the exterior mirrors on the door outer panel rather than in the mirror triangle.

The new A-Class has adopted driving assistance systems from the S Class such as cooperative driver support, which gives it the highest level of active safety in this segment. The A-Class is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations by monitoring the traffic situation.

The vehicle also comes with extended Active Brake Assist as standard. Depending on the situation, this can effectively help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or prevent them altogether. Active Emergency Stop Assist and intuitively understandable Active Lane Change Assist are also available to the new A-Class.

PRE-SAFE® PLUS is included and can recognise an imminent rear-end collision. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the brakes of the vehicle when stationary, thus minimizing the risk of injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.

The optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are another example of the technology transfer from the luxury to the compact class. These allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation. 18 individually actuated LEDs are housed in each headlamp. The daylight-like light colour of the LEDs is easy on the eyes and has a positive effect on concentration. The road ahead is precisely and brightly illuminated. LED High-Performance headlamps are a further option. As standard the new A-Class is equipped with halogen headlamps with integrated LED daytime driving lamps.

NEW Mercedes-Benz A Class: Engines and Performance

A selection of Engines are available for the new A-Class:

  • A 250 with a 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission (224 hp; combined fuel consumption, combined CO2emissions 141 g/km)
  • A 180 d with a 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission (116 hp, 260 Nm; combined fuel consumption 4.1 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 108 g/km)

The A-Class is also available with 4MATIC including fully variable torque distribution. For more driving pleasure, flick on the DYNAMIC SELECT switch.

A few colours are available for the A-Class including the non-metallic Polar White and Jupiter Red. You can also choose from the Metallic range such as Cosmos Black, Iridium Silver, and Mountain Grey.
