Mercedes-Benz EQE Electric Saloon: A Real Rival For Tesla

Mercedes-Benz sixth electric car will be the EQE Electric Saloon and is scheduled to go on sale in 2022. Exceeding 400bhp with a range of 370 miles.

As ex-Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche parted ways with Mercedes, his final duty as Chairman was singing off on the sixth electric model to the range, the EQE Saloon.

The new electric saloon is set to go on sale in 2022, and will sit in the same price bracket as the Tesla Model S.

The new EQ sub-brand will bring 10 new models to the Mercedes range, one of which being the EQE electric saloon, the development of the EQ sub-brand is set to be fully charged by 2025, with 10 new models on the road.

This development has already been rumoured to cost up to £8.7bn, with a further £17bn invested in battery technology. With more 'Clean Air Zones' being introduced in cities across the UK, manufacturers have been pushed to develop more economical cars and technologies to support them.

Mercedes predict that over a quarter of all its sales will be electric models in the next 10 years.

Mercedes-Benz new electric models will be based on existing cars. The EQE will be based closely on the E-Class, whilst a more luxury EQS is due for release in 2021 which is based on the S-Class.

The same pattern follows with the EQC (Based on GLC), EQA (Based on A-Class), EQV (Based on V-Class) and EQB (Based on the new GLB)

The EQE is said to provide drivers with 373 miles of range, this is a result of Mercedes' battery development and deliver over 400bhp.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQE saloon will come with a lower ride height in comparison to the standard E-Class and will come exclusively as four-wheel-drive.

Two electric motors will power the EQE, one driving the front and the other driving the rear. It has been rumoured that there will be a sporty RWD model but this is said to come later.

But will the Mercedes-Benz EQE Saloon have the power to compete with the Tesla Model S?
