Amazon orders 100,000 electric vans

As Amazon aims to go carbon-neutral by 2040, the internet giant has ordered 100,000 electric vans from EV start-up Rivian.

CEO Jeff Bezos announced on Thursday that the company will be ordering 100,000 electric delivery trucks from Rivian, the commerce giant will seek to meet its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2040 — 10 years earlier than is outlined by the United Nations Paris Agreement.

Rivian has attracted high profile investments from firms including Ford, with which it is working on future vehicle development, and Amazon.

The order was announced by Amazon on Thursday as it unveiled its Climate Pledge, they called on signatories to reach net zero carbon by 2040. The massive order by Amazon will accelerate the production of electric vehicles, crucial to reducing emissions from transport.

No specifications for the vans have been released yet, but Amazon has released pictures of the van badged with its Prime delivery service.

The order comes at a much-needed time for both Amazon and electric vehicle development. The electric vans will drastically reduce costs for Amazon on both fuel and help them avoid being charged in low emissions zones.

Rivian is gearing up to start production at its plant in Illinois, the facility was previously used by Mitsubishi and has the capacity to produce around 350,000 units per year.

Rivian also has plans to build and ship consumer vehicles, including the all-electric pickup truck and SUV it revealed late last year, which it aims to begin delivering to customers in 2020.
